Bret Bielema Confirms Illinois Fighting Illini Football Team Will Carry 3 Tight Ends on Travel Roster
Bielema plans to carry three tight ends, which will impact the team’s travel roster.
The Illinois football program will carry three tight ends on the travel roster for the 2023 season.
The roster change was confirmed by head coach Bret Bielema during a recent media availability.
Bielema indicated that the move was made at the request of new offensive coordinator Barry Lunney Jr.
Tight ends Tip Reiman, Luke Ford, and Kyric McGowan all figure to be in the mix for playing time in 2023, especially with the departure of Daniel Barker to the NFL.
The addition of a third scholarship to the tight end room comes one year after Bielema indicated that he wanted to go with just two scholarship tight ends.
Bielema said the recruiting climate helped factor into his decision to add another scholarship.
Last season, the Illini carried four tight ends, including redshirt freshman Griffin Moore, who has since moved to offensive tackle.
The Illini will open the 2023 season on Sept. 2 against Eastern Illinois at Memorial Stadium.
