Newcastle United swoops in to steal target from Southampton
Newcastle United have beaten Southampton to the signing of Ben Brereton Diaz, according to Football Insider.
The Magpies have agreed a deal worth £20m for the Chile international, who has been one of the most in-demand strikers in the Premier League this summer.
Brereton Diaz has scored 22 goals in 33 appearances for Blackburn Rovers in the Championship this season, and he has also impressed for Chile at international level.
Newcastle are desperate to add a new striker to their squad before the end of the transfer window, and they believe that Brereton Diaz is the ideal man for the job.
The Magpies have already spent over £100m on new signings this summer, and they are not afraid to spend more if they believe that it will help them achieve their goals.
Southampton were also interested in signing Brereton Diaz, but they were unwilling to match Newcastle's offer.
The Saints have already signed two new strikers this summer, but they were still keen on adding Brereton Diaz to their squad.
However, they have now been beaten to the signing of the Chilean by Newcastle.
Brereton Diaz is expected to undergo a medical at Newcastle on Thursday, and he could be in line to make his debut for the Magpies against Manchester City on Sunday.
